How to Be an Impactful Leader

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” —Matthew 6:33

How does God build effective leaders? He commands them to do two things:

1. Surrender to his will

2. Serve others

You may look at this and think, “What kind of leader surrenders?” But surrendering is one of the most genuine ways of showing faith. God never asks us to do anything he knows we’re not capable of doing, so in submitting to his will, we’re accepting that God has a better plan for us than we could ever have for ourselves—we’re relinquishing our personal aspirations for God’s omnipotent plan.

According to leadership expert and pastor John C. Maxwell, submission is integral to being an impactful leader. “The secret of the surrendered life is giving God the first part of every day, the first day of every week, the first portion of your income, the first consideration in every decision, and the first place in all of your life. When we surrender to him, then we have a power that really caps off the formula for success. Surrender is what brings power. We fight for power and we lose it; we surrender and we find it.”

Surrendering to God’s will is just the first step—determining specifically how he wants you to lead can be an entirely different issue. Fortunately, God commands the same thing from all of us: to serve others.

“As each has received a gift, use it serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” —1 Peter 4:10

According to Maxwell’s book, Be All You Can Be, “Success is more than just power or not violating the rights of others; it is the privilege of contributing to the betterment of others.”

When we serve others and put their needs before our own, we bring glory to God and act as an example for others to do the same. In short, we become the kind of impactful leaders God wants us to be—ones who use our God-given talents to spread the love of Christ.
